The Security Suite for AppleShare IP
The Security Suite for AppleShare IP provides an integrated set of components which greatly enhance the security of your AppleShare IP server. These products help to address a number of security issues that are specific to AppleShare IP and the Mac OS:
- AppleShare logging facilities are inadequate from a security perspective:
- The AppleShare file server component provides no usage log whatsoever, so there's no way to know who's accessing your file server, or what's being accessed.
- There is no general logging facility built into either the Mac OS or AppleShare which alerts you to security attacks or violations.
- AppleShare's Web log is too detailed to allow you to understand if your server is being accessed in undesired ways.
- AppleShare components such as FTP and SMTP use cleartext (unencrypted) passwords for access, compromising not just those components, but the AppleShare server as a whole.
- "Guest" access can severely undermine the security of the server if not used carefully.
- Various third-party components may have been added to your server which compromise its security.
- AppleShare's new remote administration facility enables anyone who has obtained the Admin password to configure the server in any way they desire.
Components of the Security Suite include:
- DoorStop version 1.0. DoorStop is easy-to-use Macintosh-based firewall software. With DoorStop, you can protect the services on your AppleShare IP machine from unwanted access. You can also keep a log of all access attempts, helping you to become of aware of potential security attacks and violations
- AFP Logger, version 1.0. AFP Logger addresses one of the biggest security holes in AppleShare IP: the lack of an access log of any sort for the file server component. With AFP Logger, not only will you get an audit log of accesses to the file server, but you'll have details on security attacks and violations. Without AFP Logger, it would be next to impossible to notice and track down file server security issues.
- The LogDoor Real-time Server Monitor, version 2.2. The industry-recognized LogDoor product adds real-time log analysis and monitoring to your AppleShare IP server, processing Web, AFP Logger and DoorStop logs. With LogDoor, security issues become immediately apparent, instead of being buried in the depths of giant log files.
- Documentation and examples. The Security Suite includes extensive new documentation and sample files, simplifying the process of securing your server.
